Mark is a critical care nurse who has worked in several different Intensive Care Units in England, the United States and New Zealand. Mark began his career as a registered nurse at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, before working in Santa Monica Hospital in Los Angeles and relocating permanently to New Zealand in 1997.
Following this, Mark worked as a Certified Flight Nurse in Waikato Hospital ICU for ten years before becoming the Unit’s Nurse Educator, a role he held for fifteen years. Part of his Nurse Educator role included becoming the Course Coordinator for the Victoria University of Wellington’s Postgraduate Critical Care Course. Also, he has been a certified NZRC CORE (ACLS) instructor for over 20 years.
Mark is a qualified Prime Practitioner, and as such, he has worked in collaboration with St John’s ambulance in Raglan attending and coordinating the management of emergencies in a rural setting. Alongside this, Mark is currently a PAR (Patient at Risk) Nurse at Waikato Hospital. This role allows him to attend to deteriorating in-patients as well as cardiac arrests and major trauma calls to the Emergency Department.
Mark's educational qualifications include a BA with Honours in philosophy, as well as his RN qualification and a Postgraduate Nursing Diploma in Intensive Care Nursing. Alongside this, he has authored two published journal papers on the subject of critical care and has been a regular speaker at conferences over the years. In addition, Mark has enjoyed co-authoring a number of online learning modules, including a Critical Care Course, ‘the Deteriorating Patient’ and ‘Delirium’.
